Secure generation of electrical power and construction and operation of a transmission system for supply of electrical energy for industrial, commercial and domestic use in Ghana; develop Volta Lake as a source of fish and a means of transportation.

Originally started with development of hydroelectric potentials of the Volta River and the construction and maintenance of a nation-wide grid transmission system and later expanded to assume responsibility for development of other energy potentials of the Republic of Ghana, including: generation of hydro-electric and thermal power; construction and operation of a transmission system for the supply of electrical energy. Transmission system comprises up to 36 substations and about 4,000 km of transmission lines, also interconnected with national electricity grids of Côte d'Ivoire, Togo and Burkina Faso. Activities cover 2 main areas:

 • 'Power Operations' - Supplies electrical power to companies and corporations in Ghana, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire and Togo; preventative and corrective maintenance on generating plants; monitors hydrology patterns; prepares Energy Supply Plan annually; Akosombo Retrofit Project; development of power generating facilities; carries out transmission system projects. Participates in projects, including: 'West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP)'; serving on Technical Committee and Working Groups of 'Strategic National Energy Plan (SNEP)'. Has taken over responsibility of integration of Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund (OECF) Barge in the National Grid.

 • 'Support Activities' - operates a modern hospital at Akosombo and 3 satellite clinics in Accra (Ghana), Akuse and Aboadze; Akosombo Township is under management of the Akosombo Management Committee which performs Local Authority functions on behalf of VRA; programming, monitoring and evaluation activities; environmental enhancement projects, including 'Volta Debre Shoals Project' and 'Renewable/Energy Efficiency Projects for the Clean Development Mechanism'; ensures lake transport safety; operates various levels of schools.

'Northern Electricity Department (NED)' established in 1997 to distribute electricity in the Brong-Ahafo, Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions of Ghana. 'Resettlement Trust Fund' established to mitigate adverse environmental affects of operations and ensures the well-bing of the communities of the Volta Basin, funding projects such as: environmental improvement; social welfare; public health; education; electricity; potable water supply; sanitation. Undertakes research, in cooperation with or at the request of the Government of Ghana and other agencies, into the environmental effects of the Volta Lake, development prospects and problems including fisheries, hydro-biological studies, public health, shore-line agriculture and selected aspects of resettlement. Subsidiary companies: 'Volta Lake Transport Company Limited (VLTC)'; 'Kpong Farms Limited' (for grain and crops); 'Volta Telecommunications Company Limited (VOLTACOM)'.
