The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

1975-03-18
History
18 Mar 1975, by the E-XE3068 - Council of the European Union. The Committee for Information and Documentation on Science and Technology of E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC) subsequently recommended, 9 Jul 1975, that the EURONET telecommunications network be implemented by PTT Administrations of the then 9 (currently 12) Member States; an agreement to this effect was signed 15 Dec 1975. Formally inaugurated 13 Feb 1980 when the telecommunications network started operations. The acronym DIANE is an abbreviation for Direct Information Access Network for Europe. EURONET DIANE ceased to exist 31 Dec 1984, since when users access differently from one country to another. Activities of one of the centres originally serving EURONET DIANE, U-XE8435 - European Commission Host Organisation (ECHO). Through this, U-XF0992 - Direct Information Access Network for Europe (DIANE) is in effect still active.
Aims
Provide users anywhere in the European Community with direct access to scientific, technical and socio-economic data via screen or teletype; integrate existing and future on-line information services in the Community into a commonly shared network on a cooperative basis; make available a variety of services operated on widely different host computers in many different countries, via one single network (EURONET is also open in principle to international organizations and organizations of non-Community countries); encourage the development of automatic translation services and the use of new technologies such as videotex.
