The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1990, by European Science Foundation (ESF) and European Commission (EC), to develop a long-term strategy in marine and polar research. Ceased to exist.

Aims

Bring together European activities in the open oceans and polar regions; draft a European strategy for ocean and polar research, taking into account development of new technologies, particularly in the fields of automated monitoring and remote sensing; identify major programmes related to specific European interests in global change.

Activities

Current concerns: operational forecasting of the ocean and coastal seas; European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA); the deep sea floor as a changing environment; the Arctic Ocean. Organizes conferences, meetings and specialized workshops. Set up; study group on the Navire européen de forages et d'intervention sous-marine (NEREIS) proposal, to ensure phasing of development of instrumentation for the study of processes above and within the upper layers of the open ocean sea bed; European Ice Sheet Modelling Initiative (EISMINT). Possible future project on biodiversity and production in the ocean.
