Founded 22 Nov 1963, Frankfurt-Main (Germany FR), as Association of Retailer-Owned Wholesalers in Foodstuff (AROW) -- Union des groupements d'achat de l'alimentation -- Union der Genossenschaftlichen Einkaufsorganisationen für Lebensmittel (UGEL). Changed title to Association of Retailer-Owned Wholesalers of Europe -- Union des Groupements d'Achat coopératifs de Détaillants de l'Europe -- Union der Genossenschaftlichen Einkaufsorganisationen Europas, 25 Feb 1987. Subsequently changed to: Union of Independent Trader's Group in Europe -- Union des groupements de commerçants détaillants indépendants de l'Europe and Union of Independent Retailer's Groups in Europe -- Union der Verbundgruppen von Selbständigen Einzelhändlern Europas, 13 May 1995. Changed title to Union des groupements de détaillants indépendants de l'Europe (UGAL) -- Union of Groups of Independent Retailers of Europe -- Union der Verbundgruppen selbständiger Einzelhändler Europas, 13 June 2002. Current title adopted 16 Oct 2013. Statutes modified: 20 May 1975, Copenhagen (Denmark); 21 Oct 1976, Paris (France); 18 Dec 1986, Brussels (Belgium); 12 Oct 1995; 11 Nov 1999. Ensure European Union regulations include and contribute to economic, political and legal promotion of independent retailers through their groups, and entitle them to a free choice of the most appropriate solutions for coping with competition.
