3 Aug 1948, London (UK), as 'International Modern Pentathlon Union -- Union internationale de pentathlon moderne (UIPM)'. First statutes adopted 1949, Stockholm (Sweden). Cross-country skiing and rifle shooting (biathlon) included from 1960, when the title International Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon Union -- Union internationale de pentathlon moderne et biathlon (UIPMB) was adopted. Although B-XB0001 - International Biathlon Union (IBU) was set up in 1993, the two sports continued to be united under UIPMB as umbrella organization until 26 Sep 1998, when the decision of IBU, 26 Jun 1998, to exist autonomously came into effect. Under revised statutes of 1998, UIPM reverted to its original title.
Govern the core Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon and other UIPM multi-sports - Tetrathlon, Triathle, Biathle, Laser Run and World Schools Biathlon - which form a developmental pyramid aimed at increasing global participation.
