History
Aug 1946, Cambridge (UK), by the Conference of Church Leaders on International Affairs. Officially constituted as a permanent agency in 1948, by 1st Assembly of B-XB3501 - World Council of Churches (WCC), set up Aug 1948, Amsterdam (Netherlands), and by the Committees of H-XH0124 - International Missionary Council (IMC), formed 6 Oct 1921. When IMC united with WCC, Dec 1961, Delhi (India), became a Commission of the WCC; on structural reorganization of that body, 1991, became a programme within the WCC. By-laws approved 1975. Referred to also by the initials CCIA/WCC and WCC/CCIA. 2006, absorbed: Commission of the Churches on Diakonia and Development (CCDD); Commission of the Churches on Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation (CJPC); Reference Group on Inter-religious Relations and Dialogue (IRRD).
Aims
Serve the World Council of Churches, its member churches, national and regional ecumenical organizations and Christian world communions with which the Council is related and other international Christian bodies as a source of information and guidance in its approach to international problems, as a medium of counsel and action, and as an organ in formulating the Christian mind on world issues and bringing that mind effectively to bear upon such issues.
