History

14 Aug 2005, Taipei (Taiwan), when Charter was ratified by members during inaugural meeting, preparatory meetings having been held since 2002.

Aims

Safeguard human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the Pacific; ensure peaceful resolution of regional disputes and the protection of human security; promote maritime culture and sustainable development in the Pacific region; encourage development of cooperation in industry, trade and technology.

Structure

General Assembly; Board of Directors. Officers: Chair; Regional Vice-Chairs (Asia; Americas; South Pacific). Local (national) Chapters or, where no Local Chapter, 'Friends of DPU'. Board of Advisors. Financial Committee. Advisory Committee. International Secretariat, headed by Secretary-General and including Deputy Secretaries-General and 2 Departments:

  • Department of Cooperation and Development, including 6 commissions - Law and Political Affairs; Human and Social Affairs; Peace and Security; Science and Technology; Industries and Economics.
  • Department of General Affairs, including 6 Divisions - Membership Services; International Liaison; Publications; General Affairs; Information; Secretarial.
