2005
History
Founded in the latter half of 2005, by 5 established and emerging National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in Eastern and Southern Africa, namely MAREN (Malawi), MoRENet (Mozambique), KENET (Kenya), RwEdNet (Rwanda) and TENET (South Africa). Originally registered in accordance with Dutch law in 2006; registered in accordance with Malawi law, 2014.
Aims
Build and operate UbuntuNet, the regional high-speed backbone network interconnecting NRENs and connecting them to other regional RENs in the world and the Internet in general; develop and provide high speed and affordable interconnectivity among NRENs and with the rest of the world; develop and share the knowledge and skills of ICT practitioners in NRENs; provide related auxiliary services to NRENs; lead and participate in research aimed at improving networking infrastructure.

Annual General Meeting. Board of Trustees, composed of 7 elected Trustees and 2 ex officio Trustees, Chairperson and CEO. Trustees are nominated by NREN members, and are elected at the Annual General Meeting for a 2-year term.
