History
Set up as an informal, non-binding, voluntary and government-led process, at the initiative of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) Member States, to address migration and development interconnections in practical and action-oriented ways.
Aims
Foster practice and policy-oriented dialogue; build trust and partnerships among states; promote sharing of knowledge and good practices; reach out to the broader international community in identifying joint, coherent and cooperative responses to current and future challenges in the field of migration and development.

No formal structure. Chair-in-Office, assisted by: Chair's Taskforce, comprised of national and, if required by the annual Chair, some international experts; GFMD Support Unit (SU), based in Geneva (Switzerland); Country Focal Points; Troika, comprising current, past, and future Chairs; Steering Group (SG), comprising 37 governments; Friends of the Forum (FOF), comprised of all GFMD States Members. Except for Support Unit, supporting framework changes with the annual rotation of the Chairmanship. Permanent Secretariat esblished Jan 2023, hosted by B-XB1112 - International Organization for Migration (IOM).
