2007-05 South Africa

History

May 2007, Ulusaba (South Africa), at first meeting, following discussions and negotiations since 1999 and formal proposal, Aug 2006, Virgin Is. Set up by group of humanitarians, lead by Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) and on the initiative of Richard Branson. Also referred to as The Elders and Global Elders.

Aims

Use collective experience, moral courage and ability to rise above parochial concerns of nation, race and creed, to help make the world a more peaceful, healthy and equitable place; contribute wisdom, independent leadership and moral courage to attempts to solve world problems; use influence and experience to persuade and facilitate action on a broad range of issues; act as "honest brokers" in conflict resolution; amplify the message on crisis situations; act as an independent voice of reason and wisdom at the shoulder of governments and other organizations; act as a role model in leading, guiding, creating and supporting initiatives, both publicly and behind the scenes.
