History

18 Feb 1963, Hamburg (Germany FR), on the initiative of G-XG5757 - Africa Association, Hamburg and members of the University of Hamburg as German Institute of African Research -- Deutsches Institut für Afrika-Forschung. Subsequently changed title into Institut für Afrika-Kunde, Hamburg (IAK), Aug 1975. Current title adopted, when became a Regional Institute of G-XG1930 - German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), 1 Jan 2007. Previously referred to in English as Institute of African Studies, Hamburg.

Aims

Monitor and study social, economic and political conditions and development in Subsaharan Africa in regard to research, consultancy services, documentation and information.
