History

2002, Aswan (Egypt), as part of the programme of Ecotechnie, by International Network of UNESCO-Cousteau Ecotechnie Chairs.

Aims

Collaborate on biodiversity education issues as part of environmental education towards sustainable development; facilitate transfer of knowledge among members; contribute to development of educational and research capacities and self-reliance of participating universities.

Activities

Projects are designed among network members to promote multidisciplinary environmental education, and include: study and recording of indigenous knowledge of peoples who are still living nomadically or semi-nomadically in most Arab countries; building up the capacity of centres of excellence of AREN in education and training in environment-related matters, including both formal and informal education with special attention to training taxonomists (world-wide programme), teachers training on biodiversity and establishment of field centres for biodiversity training. Other activities include: staff exchanges; staff development schemes; curriculum development. In cooperation with Arab MAB, establishing Education Field Centres or stations in the following biosphere reserves: Egypt - Omayed and Wadi Allaqi; Jordan - Dana; Morocco - Arganeraie and Oasis du sud marocain; Sudan - Dinder and Radom.
