The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1921, Lucerne (Switzerland), as International Federation of Christian Trade Unions of Railway, Tramway and Other Transport Workers -- Fédération internationale des syndicats chrétiens du personnel des chemins de fer, tramways et autres moyens de transport. Name changed, 1955, to International Federation of Christian Trade Unions of Transport Workers -- Fédération internationale des syndicats chrétiens du personnel des transports. Present name adopted 1970. Current Statutes adopted 13 Mar 1963, Brussels (Belgium); amended: 27-29 May 1964, Ostend (Belgium); 27-29 May 1970, Vienna (Austria); 29-30 Nov and 1-2 Dec 1976, Antwerp (Belgium); 29 June 1978, Brussels; 29 Sep-3 Oct 1986, Houffalize (Belgium). WCL merged with International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) to form International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Nov 2006. Ceased to exist, prior to 2014.

Aims

Defend at international and regional levels the interests of affiliated organizations and their members; provide moral support and material aid to affiliated organizations by ensuring permanent cooperation among them.

Activities

Supports trade union activities of member organizations in the field of transport and coordinates them at national, regional and world level; develops legal protection of transport workers; organizes congresses, conferences and training courses.

Work of the Sections:

'Aviation': considers files dealing with growing expansion, computerization, employment, introduction of new technological applications, working conditions and all-round safety; organizes workers' categories in the aviation sections and in related administrations.

'Rail' promotes at national and international level: the right to transport for all and to this end, development of effective public service and public transport; personnel policies paying special attention to vocational training, education and in-service training; fair pay together with well developed social security schemes; concertation structures providing for negotiation on rights and duties of railway workers.

'Waterways' focuses efforts on: analysing consequences of waterway transport evolution; improving the situation of workers in harbours, the merchant navy and inland navigation; combating the negative impact of current changes on workers and their families; maintaining existing rights acquired with difficulty; employment in the sector; education and continuing education of personnel.

'Road Transport': strives to remain involved at both national and international levels in technical and economic decision-making in the field and in resulting social consequences; promotes international solidarity among workers in the sector.
