27 June 1921, by League of Nations (SDN) and under the direction of Fridtjof Nansen. Comprised the first international agency dealing with refugees, covering legal and political protection and - except from 1924-1929 - material and financial help. A forerunner of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Ceased to exist in 1930, following the death of Fridtjof Nansen, activities being taken on by Nansen International Office for Refugees.
