The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1991, as a component project of International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP). Phased out in 2002, after reaching its goals.

Aims

Assist IGBP Core Projects in developing their individual data system plans; help provide an overall data system plan for IGBP; carry out activities directly leading to generation of data sets; ensure development of effective data management systems; act to ensure meeting of data and information needs of IGBP through international and national organizations and agencies.

Activities

Dataset development is an ongoing activity, with Working Groups currently active in development of global data sets for land cover, biomass burning and soils. Holds large workshop meetings when wider input necessary. Current dataset products (1994-1998): continuing production of 1 km AVHRR products as 10-day composites on CD-ROM; tested methodologies for land cover classification from AVHRR and other satellite and ground data; development of tested methodologies for assessing wetland extent and variability over time; set of databases of soil parameters; fire Biomass Information System (in collaboration with IGAC); with CEOS, a 1 km global topography database (GLOBE); comprehensive review of global data sets needed but currently unavailable in the area of oceans and atmosphere, leading to development of pilot data sets.
