The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1990, by Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC), following international consultations associated with the end of the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade and endorsed in 1991. Currently responsibility lies with Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC), Loughborough (UK). Closed 2003.

Aims

Facilitate the sharing of relevant applied research information in water supply and sanitation sector on a global basis.

Activities

Topic network coordinators (TNCs) maintain and run their own networks of researchers in specified topic areas: 'Institutional development and economic issues': institutional development; 'Socio-cultural and health issues': participatory approach, hygiene behaviour, urban environmental health, gender issues; 'Technical issues': rainwater harvesting, solar disinfection and distillation, iron and manganese removal, water quality monitoring, handpumps, pit latrines, nightsoil/sludge treatment, solid waste management recycling, waste water management, low cost sewerage. Local Network Centres (LNCs), established in Latin America, West Africa and South Asia, provide information about applied research activities at the local level. Maintains a database of applied research projects.
