History
Established at International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM), after being proposed at World Summit on Sustainable Development, 2002, Johannesburg (South Africa).
Aims
Promote chemical safety around the world; achieve sound management of chemicals throughout their life cycle so that, by 2020, chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on human health and the environment.

Secretariat is integrated within Chemicals and Wastes Branch of Economy Division of UNEP. Secretariat originally located at the former H-XF5537 - UNEP DTIE Chemicals Branch.
