Founded

1981-08-03

History

Established as an international organization by the Protocol to the Treaty of Peace, signed by the Governments of Egypt and Israel (receiving states) and witnessed by the USA. Received initial funding on 9 Sep 1981.

Aims

Supervise implementation of the security provisions in Annex I of the Egyptian-Israeli Treaty of Peace, dated 26 Mar 1979; employ best efforts to prevent any violation of its terms; monitor deployment of Egyptian Border Guards along the Egyptian side of the border with Gaza according to Agreed Arrangements, signed 1 Sep 2005 by Egypt and Israel, as amended 2007, 2018, and 2021; verify other agreed arrangements between the Treaty Parties.

Structure

Director General exercises authority through staff at headquarters in Rome (Italy), the Force Commander and staff in the Sinai and the Director General's Representatives and staff in Cairo (Egypt) and Israel. Sinai is largest MFO element and divided into: Headquarters; Personnel Branch; Force Protection; Operations Branch; Logistics Branch; Support Branch; Planning Branch; Information and Communications Technology Branch; Finance; Liaison Branch. Functional units include: Civilian Observer Unit; the Northern Battalion; the Southern Battalion; the Coastal Patrol Unit. Force, with personnel from 15 Troop-Contributing Nations, is supported by international direct hire civilians and Egyptian contractor personnel.
