Founded 18 Apr 1993, by Mikhail Gorbachev after delegates at the Earth Summit, June 1992, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), requested him to create and launch an organization that would apply the emergency response model of the Red Cross to ecological issues.


Help secure a safe and sustainable future for all by fostering a shift in values and cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity's relationship with nature; respond to the combined challenges of security, poverty and environmental degradation; seek solutions through dialogue, meditation and cooperation; promote legal, ethical and behavioural norms that ensure basic changes in the values, actions and attitudes of governments, the private sector and civil society, necessary to develop a sustainable global community; contribute to the prevention and resolution of conflicts arising from environmental degradation; provide assistance to people affected by the environmental consequences of wars, conflicts and man-made calamities.
