History

May 1991, Nyanga (Zimbabwe), within the framework of African Council of AIDS Service Organizations (AfriCASO).

Aims

Facilitate sharing of information, ideas, experiences and resources in AIDS-related work; promote cooperation and collaboration in HIV/AIDS work; strengthen country networks; promote coherent and supportive non-discriminatory policies on medical, social, economic, political, legal, ethical and religious matters affecting people with HIV infection and AIDS; defend the rights of HIV-infected persons with AIDS and lobby governments to enact legislation which will address the plight of affected people and effective response to HIV/AIDS.

Activities

Main areas: 'Strengthening Country Networks' - including country visits, country level capacity building workshops, database development, project-to-project contact and equipment support; 'Information and Capacity Building' - publications and circulations, information exchange workshops, training workshops and regional conferences; 'Advocacy' - policy development and harmonization, partnership with SADC-HSCU, development of SANASO promotional materials and toolkit on advocacy and formation of strategic alliances. Organizes Congress (every 2 years).
