The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

July 2002, Brussels (Belgium), at Pledging Conference. Originates from Northern Dimension Initiative of European Union (EU). Mar 2001, International financial institutions (IFIs) expressed willingness to cooperate, and their cooperation, the EU's mandate and donor support led to the creation of NDEP. NDEP and NDEP Support Fund became fully operational in 2002. Implementing agencies (IFIs): European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD); European Investment Bank (EIB); International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) (World Bank); Nordic Investment Bank (NIB).

Aims

Promote and finance environmental investments in the Baltic Sea and Barents region.

Activities

As at the end of 2005, had leveraged investments of over euro 1,500 million for environmental projects. Gathers collective expertise and know-how of the IFIs, EC and Russia; builds on the Baltic Sea Environment Programme; runs the 'Nuclear Window' programme, prioritizing the safe and secure decommissioning of Russian nuclear submarines. Grants support projects that: tackle urgent environmental infrastructure problems; require additional funding to leverage financing from international and local sources; are financially viable; involve progress monitoring and amendments to the project if necessary; have the support of the Russian government. Support Fund is designed to complement the resources provided by international financial institutions working in north-west Russia. In order to deal with nuclear waste, provides full non-refundable funding within an international cooperation framework.
