History
Established 1958, Brussels (Belgium), as Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat) -- Office statistique des Communautés européennes -- Oficina Estadistica de las Comunidades Europeas -- Statistisches Amt der Europäischen Gemeinschaften -- Serviço de Estatistica das Comunidades Européias -- Istituto Statistico delle Comunità Europee -- Bureau voor de Statistiek van de Europese Gemeenschappen -- Europeiska Gemenskapernas Statistik Kontor -- Europaeiske Faellesskabers Statistiske Kontor -- Statistiko Grafio ton Evropaikon Kinotiton. Originally also referred to by English initials SOEC and French initials OSCE. Functions as a Directorate-General of European Commission (EC) (EC), currently based in Luxembourg with a department in Brussels. Legal basis: Statistical Law adopted by Council of the European Union Feb 1997, defining division of responsibility between national and Community statistical authorities; Community Decision, 1997, clarifying the role of the Community Statistical Authority; Article 285 of Treaty of Amsterdam, signed 2 Oct 1997.
Aims
Provide high-quality statistics for Europe; collect, harmonize and disseminate statistical information on the European Union (EU) and the main countries with which EU maintains relations; together with national statistical institutes, harmonize statistics in order to obtain comparable data for EU member states.
