History

Mar 1989, Los Angeles CA (USA), as Pacific Islands Development Association (PIDA), in the 'Los Angeles Accord'. Present title adopted Dec 1989, following poll of member agencies. Formal agreement signed Nov 1990, Fiji. An NGO Pacific Council for Development had previously been set up provisionally, Sep 1984, in the 'Tonga Covenant'. First registered in accordance with the law of Papua New Guinea, 1991; re-registered in accordance with the law of Vanuatu, 1999. Also referred to as FSP International.

Aims

Facilitate the process of self-help development for people of the Pacific, particularly the poor and the rural majorities.

Facilitates and promotes members' work in integrated rural development; designs and plans multi-country projects implemented through local member NGOs; manages regional projects. Major sectors include: Conservation; Forestry, Coastal/Marine; Small Enterprise Development; Community Health.
