Member International Catholic Organizations (OICs) work in Church mission areas where the laity are for preference involved but in a far wider perspective than would be understood by the appellation 'lay apostolate'. Rather they are an important aspect of all Church activities in the international sphere, with the Conference acting as their focal point for information, reflection and coordination. Conference: carries out research on problems of common interest to members; collaborates with missions; supports regional activities undertaken by OICs; facilitates the work of OICs with special interest in a major activity of the United Nations. The latter topics have included: International Years for population, children, youth; Decades for women, human rights; migration; literacy work; culture; adult education. It carries out preparatory studies to contribute ideas on themes of the different Synods. These have included: evangelization of the contemporary world; catechesis; the family; reconciliation. Conference has been closely associated with the different 'Holy Years', especially those of 1975 and 1983. It organizes information, training and discussion sessions on international life. Conference Working Groups: Health; Education; Human Rights; Youth; Against Poverty; Adult Education; Communication; Peace in the World.
