24 Jan 1949, as part of United Nations Peace-keeping Operations (DOMP), by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), within, United Nations System, in the framework of the United Nations (UN).


Acting as part of UN Peacekeeping Operations, observe, to the extent possible, developments pertaining to the strict observance of the ceasefire of 17 Dec 1971 and report thereon to the Secretary-General.

Observers are currently stationed on both sides of the Line of Control agreed upon by India and Pakistan under the Simla agreement of July 1972. Despite some disagreement between Pakistan and India as to UNMOGIP mandate, UNMOGIP observers report developments pertaining to observance of the ceasefire along the line of control and assist both sides in keeping the peace, subject to restrictions on the activities of military observers on the Indian side of the Line of Control.
