21 Feb 1944, Ottawa (Canada), as 'Société Richelieu', for promoting the social and cultural needs of the francophone population of Canada. Present name adopted in 1971, when activities expanded in order to respond to needs of French communities worldwide. Fondation Richelieu International set up in 1977.
