The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1984, Manila (Philippines), as an independent membership association of non-governmental organizations and national and regional coalitions active in the promotion and protection of human rights of disadvantaged communities and groups in Asia, having been launched at 4th annual meeting, Sep 1983, of the Standing Committee on Human Rights of LAWASIA - Law Association for Asia and the Pacific. No recent activity reported since 1995.

Aims

Help strengthen non-governmental human rights organizations in Asia and enhance their capacities for human rights activism, particularly in the social and economic fields in the rural areas.

Activities

Especially concerned about the promotion and violation of economic, social and cultural rights. Seeks to initiate participatory action research on human rights violations on victim groups such as rural women, migrant labor, small fishermen, indigenous people. Involved in studying critical areas of law which inhibit human rights activism such as laws governing associational rights of grassroots organizations and laws governing access to information from public authorities. Seeks to provide support and solidarity in cases of violations of the rights of support groups working with grassroots-level communities of the rural poor.
