History

1974, as the Section of Theriology (Mammalogy) of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). Statutes amended at 5th International Theriological Congress, Aug 1989, Rome (Italy). Previously also known under the title: IUBS Section of Mammalogy. New name and organizational structure adopted, 2006; still under the auspices of IUBS.

Aims

Promote international cooperation and understanding in the science of mammalogy (theriology); encourage collaboration in conservation of mammals, in research, in preservation of mammal collections, in computerization of collection data, in exchange of students, data and specimens, in promoting a stable and evolution based nomenclature, in issuing of collecting and specimen export permits, and in any activity that promotes knowledge and understanding of the Earth's mammalian fauna.

Activities

Organizes International Mammalogical Congress (every 4 years), formerly known as the International Theriological Congress. Committees work on conservation, systematic collections, nomenclature, history/archives and other topics as needed. Standing Committees (4): Archive/Historian; Conservation; Nomenclature; Systematic Collections. Ad hoc committees (3): Future Directions; IMC-11 Advisory; Representative to IUBS (ICSU).
