History

Founded within D-XD0165 - ASEAN, on signature of 'AUN Charter' by ASEAN Ministers responsible for higher education and of 'Agreement on the establishment of AUN' by the Presidents/Rectors/Vice-Chancellors of the 11 Participating Universities. Set up following recommendations of ASEAN Heads of State/Government at 4th ASEAN Summit, Jan 1992, Singapore (Singapore), and adoption of both Charter and Memorandum of Agreement at 3rd Meeting of 'ASEAN Sub-Committee on Education (ASCOE)', 20-22 Jun 1995, Manila (Philippines).

Aims

Strengthen the existing network of cooperation among universities in the region by promoting collaborative study and research programmes on the priority areas identified by ASEAN; promote cooperation and solidarity among scientists and scholars in ASEAN member countries; develop academic and professional human resources in the region; produce and transmit scientific and scholarly knowledge and information to achieve ASEAN goals; promote information dissemination including electronic networking of libraries, exchanges and sharing of appropriate information among members of the academic community, policy-makers, students and other relevant users.

Structure

'ASEAN University Network Board of Trustees (AUN BOT)' (meeting at least twice a year), comprises a representative of each ASEAN country, designated by the respective government, plus (ex officio) ASEAN Secretary-General and Executive Director of the Network. Secretariat, headed by Executive Director, hosted by Thailand's Commission on Higher Education. Includes K-XK2078 - Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (SEED-Net).
