Founded 1989, as one of 9 distributed data centers of G-XG1774 - Earth Observing System (EOS) within (US) National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Currently within Earth Institute, Columbia University, functioning as World Data Center for Human Interactions in the Environment. Previously referred to as Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network.
Facilitate access to, use and understanding of environmental and socio-economic data; conduct interdisciplinary research on human-environment interaction; extend the benefit of access to interdisciplinary data to users, including government agences and the general public.
