History

Feb 1968, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), as Bureau for the Placement and Education of African Refugees (BPEAR), by H-XD3027 - Organization of African Unity (OAU). Name changed, Jul 1980 to OAU Bureau for Refugees -- Bureau de l'OUA pour les réfugiés. Activities taken over by H-XE0456 - AU Commission on Refugees.

Aims

Collect, collate and disseminate information on the plight of African refugees, on education and employment facilities, and on national legislation including amnesty laws and voluntary repatriation; award scholarship to African refugees; inform OAU Member States and the international community at large of the patterns, causes and consequences of refugee movements in Africa; protect refugees by establishing appropriate interventions with host governments; promote the level of education and seek assistance from Member States in finding employment for African refugees.

Part of the Political Department of OAU. Sections (2): Research and Placement; Education and Training. Internal committees: AU Commission on Refugees comprising 53 Member States represented by their respective resident ambassadors in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia); and H-XE0457 - OAU Coordinating Committee on Assistance to Refugees, composed of representatives of OAU, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), UNHCR, ILO, UNDP, WHO and other United Nations and voluntary organizations.
