History
May 1994, by Aleksander Einseln, having been proposed Nov 1993, by the Baltic countries with the assistance of Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and UK. Also referred to as Baltic Peacekeeping Battalion. Activities discontinued on completion of objectives, 26 Sept 2003.
Aims
Assist the Baltic countries to participate in international peacekeeping; facilitate closer cooperation among the Baltic countries; increase military cooperation within the NATO framework.
Structure
Organized as an infantry battalion comprising staff, headquarters- and logistics company, and 3 infantry companies - a total of 721 personnel. The responsibility for the establishment and manning is shared on an even basis by the Baltic countries - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are each organizing an infantry company named ESTCOY, LATCOY and LITCOY, respectively. BALTBAT is located at 3 National Training Centres.
'Support Organization': (i) BALTBAT Steering Group (represents the political level), consisting of Chairman and representatives from the Baltic countries and the supporting nations. (ii) BALTBAT Military Working Group (MWG) (represents the military level), consisting of Chairman and representatives from the Baltic States, the supporting Western countries, USA, BALTBAT Commander and BALTBAT Training Team Commander. (iii) BLATBAT Training Team (BTT) (everyday training support and advisory activities in the Baltic countries), organized with a staff and 3 Training Teams. Also: an interim Logistic Sub Working Group, comprising representatives from BALTBAT staff, the three Baltic countries and the Nordic countries; this Group is chaired by Denmark, represented by the Army Operational Command Denmark Logistics Branch.
