18 Dec 1991, on adoption by General Assembly of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN). Replaces U-XU1322 - United Nations Programme of Action for African Economic Recovery and Development (UNPAAERD) (1986-1990). Concluded 2002.
Accelerate transformation, integration, diversification and growth of African economies so as to strengthen them within the world economy, reduce their vulnerability to external shocks, increase their dynamism, internalize the process of sustained development and enhance self-reliance; accord special attention to human development and increased productive employment; provide a framework for pursuing goals established by the General Assembly.
Not an organizational unit but a programme executed by the UN Department of Economic and Social Development, which acts as Secretariat.
