17 Dec 1198, France, by St Jean de Matha. The original object was to ransom Christians taken captive by Moors or Mohammedans, by volunteering to become slaves in place of the captives if needs be. Members are said to have freed 900,000 captives. Became mendicant order Dec 1609. The Third Order Secular of the Most Holy Trinity, founded 1199, is an associated lay order of men and women.
