History

14 Feb 1943, Madrid (Spain), by Saint Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer. Received pontifical approvals in 1947 and 1950. Ceased to exist as an independent institution, 28 Nov 1982, when it became a as a clerical association intrinsically united to F-XF3805 - Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei (Opus Dei), under Pope John-Paul II.

Aims

Help priests of the secular clergy to seek sanctity in the exercise of their ministry in accordance with the spirituality and asceticism of Opus Dei.

Structure

An association of priests inseparably united to F-XF3805 - Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei (Opus Dei). Priests incardinated in Opus Dei are automatically members of the Priestly Society. In addition, priests and deacons already incardinated in a diocese may join the Priestly Society, in response to a vocation to live their ministry in their diocese according to Opus Dei's spirit, while remaining entirely and exclusively dependent upon their bishop. The Prelate of Opus Dei is President General of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross.
