History
Oct 1987, under mandate of F-XF3257 - Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) through Okanagan Statement and Programme of Action. First met 1-2 Feb 1988, Lusaka (Zambia). Serviced by C-XC0376 - Commonwealth Secretariat (International Affairs Division). Chaired by Canada, under a special fund set up for this purpose. Ceased to exist, 1994.
Aims
Provide high-level impetus and guidance in furtherance of the objectives of the Commonwealth's 1987 Okanagan Statement and Programme of Action on Southern Africa, which reaffirmed the Commonwealth's determination to work to eradicate apartheid from South Africa, assist its victims and promote stability and self-reliance in the Southern African region; reaffirm or institute a range of measures to achieve these goals.
