Founded 26 Jul 1961, Dar es Salaam (Tanganyika), as Inter-Territorial Episcopal Board of Eastern Africa (ITEBEA), at 1st Inter-Territorial Episcopal Meeting. Full time Secretariat from 1964.

Aims

Inspire and empower God's family in AMECEA to a credible and prophetic witness to Christ by promoting unity, justice, peace and solidarity.

Structure

Plenary Assembly (every 4 years); Executive Board; Secretariat in Nairobi (Kenya). Coordinates activities of: (1) E-XE5117 - AMECEA Pastoral Institute (API/Gaba), set up 1967, Eldoret (Kenya). (2) AMECEA Social Communications Department, set up 1968, whose activities include: training workshops, seminars and lectures; publications; communication surveys and research; representing AMECEA with other bodies. (3) AMECEA Documentation Service (ADS), now a desk under AMECEA Social Communications Department, set up 1973 to share pastoral initiatives and experience among the dioceses and publicize AMECEA activities. (4) Apostolate to Nomads. (5) E-XE1948 - Catholic University of Eastern Africa, The (CUEA), set up 3 Nov 1992, to train clergy, religious and lay people, having previously functioned as Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA). (6) AMECEA Pastoral Department, set up 1994. (7) Blessed Bakanja AMECEA College, set up 1998; a regional theological seminary/house of formation.
