History

16 Dec 1992, New York NY (USA), by resolution 797 (1992) of United Nations Security Council (UNSC). One of the United Nations Peace-keeping Operations (DOMP) within United Nations (UN). Officially ceased to exist 9 Dec 1994, although residual functions carried out to end Jan 1995.

Activities

Major areas of responsibility: 'Political': Facilitates and supervises implementation of the peace accords, in particular through chairing of the overseeing Supervisory and Monitoring Commission (CSC). 'Military': Monitors and verifies the cease-fire, the withdrawal of foreign forces, the destruction of armaments, the demobilization of military forces, including the disbanding of private and irregular armed groups and establishes security for vital infrastructures. 'Electoral': Assists and monitors the entire electoral process. 'Humanitarian': Coordinates and monitors all humanitarian assistance operations, including resettlement of refugees and displaced persons, food aid and other assistance for emergency relief and to demobilized forces and for the rehabilitation process. United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance to Mozambique (UNOHAC) assists in this coordination.
