History

Nov 1967, San Juan (Puerto Rico), at inaugural meeting attended by heads of 16 Caribbean universities, following recommendations of meeting 1967, Tobago. Registered under Jamaican law.

Aims

Promote positive, carefully directed efforts for Caribbean development; encourage contact, communication and collaboration among universities and research institutes of the greater Caribbean region, through meetings, joint undertakings in teaching and research, publications, staff and student exchange; work with national associations of universities to achieve excellence in teaching and research and to develop advanced level studies.

Activities

Organizes: meetings; workshops; conferences; seminars; Assembly of UNICA Presidents. Program areas: agriculture - increased food production of the small farmer; science - new sources/alternative forms of energy; education - audio-visual material related to Caribbean region for classroom use. Includes UNICA Consortium for the Training of Administrators of Natural Areas in the Lesser Antilles.
