History

12 Jun 1954, Rome (Italy), on coming into force of Constitution approved by 7th Session of Conference of B-XB0971 - FAO, (1953, Resolution 33). Constitution amended at the 9th (1962), 20th (1973), and 22nd (1977) Sessions of the Commission, and subsequently approved by the 39th (1962, Resolution 3/39), 61st (1973, Resolution 5/61) and 72nd (1977, Resolution 5/72) Sessions of FAO Council respectively. Europe is now free from FMD and, since 1992, no regular vaccination is permitted in the region. In response to these changed circumstances, objectives extended, Apr 1993, Rome. Referred to also under the English acronyms EuFMD and FAO/EUFMD.

Aims

Promote national and international action with respect to control measures against foot-and-mouth disease with a view to its ultimate eradication from Europe. Extended objectives: monitor the FMD situation in the surrounding area and worldwide and disseminate the information obtained; promote appropriate areas of research; provide a forum to coordinate prevention and control of FMD in Member Countries; establish effective surveillance and monitoring of the FMD situation in collaboration with surrounding countries; encourage the development and implementation of policies and strategies to ensure a prompt and effective response to outbreaks of FMD in these countries.
