Founded

1525

History

1525, by Matteo da Bascio, as a Catholic religious mendicant order of men. First named Friars Minor of the Eremetical Life -- Frères Mineurs de la Vie Erémétique. Recognized as an autonomous branch by Pope Clement VII. It is an integral part of the Order of Friars Minor or Franciscans created by St Francis of Assisi in 1209. It has equal status with the two other branches: R-XR1642 - Order of Friars Minor and R-XR1637 - Order of Friars Minor Conventual.

Aims

Maintain missions; carry out a variety of pastoral activities; work through parish activity; promote preaching and inner missions.

Structure

At international level: General Minister and 8 councillors, headquartered in Rome (Italy). Territorial jurisdictions - Provinces, Vice-Provinces or Custodies - are headed by a Major Superior (Provincial, Vice-Provincial or Regular Superior) and 4 councillors.
