Founded

1967

History

Founded as Association for Theological Education in the Near East (ATENE). Became Association of Theological Institutes in the Middle East -- Association des instituts de théologie du Moyen-Orient in 1980, at General Assembly, when new statutes were adopted. Present name adopted, 3 Jun 1992. Since 1975, affiliated with D-XD2971 - Middle East Council of Churches (MECC). Activities suspended from 1999 to 2019, then reactivated.

Aims

Academic: help theological instruction be more in keeping with growing needs of the region; practical: pool material and human resources to cope better with academic needs; ecclesiastical: prepare future clergy and lay people to assume responsibility in the Churches of the region; general: promote fraternal relationships among institutes, instructors and student bodies, helping institutes to share information, raising standards of theological education, encouraging relationship between theological studies and the life of the Churches and increasing theological cooperation with other institutes in and outside the region.
