History

1120, Jerusalem (Israel), on the initiative of Hugues de Payens and Geoffroy de Saint-Omer, as a religious military order of knighthood for the protection of pilgrims during the period of the Crusades. Full name: Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon -- Pauperes Commilitiones Christi Templique Salomonis, deriving from the fact that the house in Jerusalem was built on the site of Solomon's temple. Rule drawn up by St Bernard, adapted from that of St Benedict. The Templars' wealth and influence throughout Europe (15,000 Knights in 900 commanderies) led to their suppression in the early 14th century. The last Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, was executed in 1307. He is said to have left a charter in accordance with which the Knights perpetuated themselves, leading, in 1804, to the public announcement of the existence in its present form of R-XR0337 - Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (SMOTJ). The Templars' Rule was used for several centuries by R-XR8907 - Teutonic Order. Founding of R-XR0371 - Order of Knights Templars was modelled on Knights Templar.
