History

20 Dec 1963, Baguio (Philippines). Statutes amended 1974, Singapore (Singapore); Jul 2005, Bangkok (Thailand). Regional organization of H-XA3490 - World Confederation of Labour (WCL). Following merger of H-XA1667 - International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and WCL, Nov 2006, into A-XM2085 - International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), unification of regional bodies expected by Nov 2007. Ceased to exist, 4 Sep 2007, during dissolution congress, Bangalore (India). Activities taken over by E-XK0006 - ITUC - Asia Pacific (ITUC-AP).

Aims

Further advance the cause of unionism in Asian society; institutionalize Asian Trade Federations (ATFs) in its formal structure and promote formation/expansion of national trade federations as a strategy to organize and deliver services to members and develop 'workers' action towards more comprehensive social goals.

Structure

Congress (every 4 years) elects Executive Board of 17 members. Management Board, comprising President, Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General, 2 Vice-Presidents (Northeast Asia, Trade Action) and Treasurer. Asian Trade Federations (6): U-XE8560 - Asia Federation of Employees in Public Service (ASIAFEDOP); D-XD5031 - Asian Brotherhood of Clerical Workers (ABCW); H-XD2137 - Asian Confederation of Teachers (ACT); H-XM0954 - Asian Trade Federation of Clothing, Leather, Textile and Handloom Workers (ATF-CLTH); H-XD6956 - Asian Trade Federation for the Mixed Industries Group (ATF-MIG); H-XD9317 - Asian Trade Federation of Transport Workers, Dhaka (ATF-TW).
