11 Dec 1972, under the aegis D-XD4238 - Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) within the framework of T-XT7163 - Nordic Cultural Cooperation. Commenced activities 1973. Also known as Nordisk Vulkanisk Institut (NORDVOLC) -- Pohjoismainen Vulkanologinen Instituutti. Original title: Nordic Volcanological Institute (NVI) -- Institut nordique de volcanologie -- Nordisk Vulkanologisk Institut (NORDVULK) -- Pohjoismainen Vulkanologinen Instituutti -- Norraena eldfjallastödin. Merged with geology and geophysics sections of the Science Institute, University of Iceland into Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland, 2004, when it adopted current title.


Perform volcanological research, aimed at the most important aspects of volcanology: petrography, geochemistry, geophysics and the history of volcanoes; provide facilities for scientists and students to study volcanism and related topics.
