1209 Assisi Italy

1209, Assisi (Italy), by St Francis, as a Catholic religious mendicant order of men, when the Rule was approved by Innocent III. Another rule, known as the 'First Rule' (sic), was drawn up by St Francis in 1221, and is more complete than the original. It was approved, 1223, by Honorius III. The Rule was characterized by absolute poverty, not just of the Friars but of the Order itself. Various reform movements resulted in transformation in 1517 into an autonomous branch and integral part of Order of Friars Minor or Franciscans having equal status with the two other branches: R-XR1637 - Order of Friars Minor Conventual and R-XR1636 - Ordo Fratrum Minorum Capuccinorum (OFM Cap). The order has been subject to a number of reforms, the present constitutions dating from 1987.
