1998, Freiburg (Germany), with initial funding of the Government of Germany. Inaugurated Oct 1998, Rome. Part of Fire Ecology Research Group of Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. Comes within E-XK2002 - United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). A Specialized Centre of F-XF1447 - Open Partial Agreement on the Prevention of, Protection against and Organization of Relief in Major Natural and Technological Disasters (EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement), University of Freiburg (Germany). Since 2005, Associate Institute of F-XF2488 - United Nations University (UNU).
Aims
Serve as secretariat of UN-ISDR Global Wildland Fire Network and the Wildland Fire Advisory Group, to enhance international cooperation in wildland fire management; advise national, regional and international bodies in the development of policies to reduce negative impacts of fire on the global environment and to enhance ecologically sound and sustainable use of fire in natural and production systems.
