The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History
Jul 1992, by E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC), as a joint project of U-XK0152 - Phare Programme and U-XK0518 - Tacis Programme. Implemented in the framework of F-XF2147 - European Union (EU) policy on the strengthening of human rights and democracy. Formed part of the European Democracy Initiative of the F-XF0667 - European Parliament (EP). Managed by H-XF2411 - European Human Rights Foundation (EHRF). Also referred to as New Democracy Programme. Ceased to exist, activities currently included in E-XK1926 - European Instrument for Democracy and for Human Rights (EIDHR).
Aims
Contribute to the consolidation of democratic societies governed by the rule of law in Central and Eastern European countries and in the successor republics of the former Soviet Union, currently members of CIS and Mongolia. In particular, support: better understanding of practical democracy at local as well as national level; activities of NGOs and associations contributing to a pluralist democratic society; transfer of specific technical expertise on practical democracy to professional groups in the countries concerned.
