History

1989, by European Sports Conference (ESC) as a working group on Women and Sport. Transformed into a free-standing body with permanent status, 1993, after presentation of a final report, with Associate Member status on the ESC Executive Committee since 1994.

Aims

Represent, defend and promote the interests of women in sport at a European level; support and further develop the participation of girls and women in sport; help increase the number of women in decision-making bodies and in administration of sport at all levels; educate women for decision-making in sport through mentor programmes; promote involvement of female representatives in local, regional and national delegations at sport-political, scientific and sport-practical events, conferences, seminars and workshops, at national and international levels; strengthen cooperation and encourage the exchange of experience on women and sport issues among European countries; cultivate relations with international organizations and bodies on women and sport issues and, where appropriate, establish links of cooperation; motivate international and sport bodies to support and finance projects on women and sport; encourage and increase scientific research projects in various sports sciences for initiating, supporting and adopting women's perspectives.
