Founded 23 Nov 1974, Kinshasa (Congo DR), following decision at a symposium in 1973, Yamoussoukro (Côte d'Ivoire), and previous efforts commencing with Pan-African meeting of journalists, 1961, Bamako (Mali), under the auspices of H-XD3027 - Organization of African Unity (OAU), when H-XH3405 - Pan African Journalists' Union, 1961 (PAJU) was set up (ceased activities 1965). Also known as Union of African Journalists (UAJ) - Union des journalistes africains (UJA).
Work for the benefit of the continent and African journalists in a spirit of cooperation and African unity; promote cooperation among journalists; coordinate professional activities; defend the right to freedom of expression in the spirit of realistic understanding, especially in the struggle against apartheid; defend African causes in general.
